Fire alarms were phoned in to the Township Office on Sammon Avenue. A 24-hour service was provided with a switchboard operator answering calls by day, and a watchman responding at night.

The Sammon Street garage was replaced in 1954 with a modern fire hall on Woodbine Avenue.

By 1960, East York boasted that it had the lowest per capita fire loss for Canadian municipalities with a population over 10,000.
