Established in 1871 the Letteney Bro.'s Store was ranked "as one of the most thoroughly known and best advertised business houses in three counties...(and) are in a position which rivals the largest city establishments." Four floors featured an array of general merchandise goods, clothing and furnishings.

On February 13th, 1899 the Digby business district block was entirely destroyed by the most disastrous fire in towns history. Between itsdiscovery at 9:45pm in the basement of G. I. Letteney & Bro's large dry goods store and 3:30am, when it was brought under control, the fire had burned to the ground at least twenty-five buildings. Combined with a severe northeast gale and blinding snowstorm, the situation was made more grave. The entire south end portion of town became vulnerable. When folks woke the next morning it was a scene of smoldering foundations. Some of the destroyed included these early prominent names and businesses: G. I. Letteney & Bro.'s; J. F. Saunders; Wilson Block; Keen & Hutchinson's Carriage Factory; Shreve Block; Burnham Block; Dunham Block; J. L. Peters; H. B. Short; Turnbull & Welsh Block and Warne Block.

However, as has always been our characteristic, the people showed great resilience and positive attitudes when in the "Digby Weekly Courier" they advertised the places where businesses were being set up to continue "business as usual".

A flash fire caused $15,000 damage to Central Motors Limited, a garage and service station on Digby's main street.

Of unknown origin, the fire began shortly after noon on Friday. The building was gutted and six cars were destroyed in the blaze. Slight damage was caused to Stedman's Department Store, next door.

Reginald J. Walker, President of Central Motors Limited, received minor burns about the face. One of the firemen, James Wamback, was rushed to Digby General Hospital suffering from inhalation or exertion.
