West St. Modeste is a fishing community on the Labrador side of the Straits of Belle Isle. It started as a French fishing station in the early 1700's. It was also a part of the concessions given to Pierre Constantin in 1716; he had a cod fishery and sealing station maintained on St. Modeste Island. West St. Modeste was used by the French until 1763, when they were excluded from the Labrador fishery as a result of the Paris Treaty. By 1774, it was owned by a Bristol company called Noble and Pinson and it was settled by Newfoundlanders and the English in the mid 1800's.
