By 1847, Dickinson had purchased a number of ships to transport livestock, grain, logs, cheese, and passengers, and by 1850 Dickinson's fleet numbered 16 steamers and 60 barges. He became known as King of the Rideau, as his ships could always be seen sailing the waters.
