As the popularity of the park increased owners added a small petting zoo as a bonus attraction. One visitor from Chicago in the 1920s wrote to the Toronto Globe the following;
"..the finest camp I was ever in and I will never forget Bowmanville."

By 1964, under new ownership, the site changed names to become the Bowmanville Zoo. The current owners of the park took control in 1988 and changed the name yet again to the Bowmanville Zoological Park.

Today the Zoo is open to the public from the spring to the fall and entertains record crowds. They are also the leading supplier of animal talent for television and movie productions. The Cream of Barley Mill Tourist Camp and the Zoo both helped to raise Bowmanville's international exposure while maintaining a necessary link with residents.

Locals and visitors alike have used the zoo as a backdrop to celebrate many occasions both personal and community wide. Staff and animals at the Zoo make themselves available for most community events in town. Elephants and other large animals are always present in our parades while monkeys and other smaller creatures visit libraries and schools.

Our 150 years have seen many changes in Bowmanville due to urban sprawl, fires, building additions and other factors. As the landscape slowly alters one thing remains the same. The people that live in this town continue to celebrate the community in which they reside. From a very tangible street festival, parade or picnic to the fondest of distant memories, the town of Bowmanville has found a place in the hearts of its residents.
