Rarely a fossilized tree stump or branch will appear in the stone. Probably captured during a flood period, a tree would be snatched from the river flood plain and be carried along until it sinks and becomes part of the river bottom. Eventually it becomes covered with silt and sand.
This fossil tree stump is from an ancient plant called coridites and is on display at the Wallace and Area Museum.
