On June 24 to 25, 1957 the last steam run took place for the O.N.R. The steam locomotive No. 701 took this historic journey with this crew including Conductor Charles Spence, Fireman Cliff Schubert, Engineer Tom Muldoon, Trainmen Ed. Kenny and Horace Aubrey.

The transition from steam to diesel meant many consequences for the community of North Bay. Diesel lcoomotives meant the need for less maintenance workers. The downsizing of staff for the railroads meant the community's population were forced to look elsewhere for employment. The importance and place for the rail industry in the community began to dwindle.
