Community Waterfront Friends Vision
2002
North Bay, Ontario, Canada

15

The same people who formed the core group brought the original Vision to this stage. The Vision was digitized, and copies could be made to hand out, as well as larger posters, which could be placed strategically. One is in the lobby of City Hall, and a 4 ft by 10 ft Billboard sized one is located at the CP Station. Since City Council has adopted the Vision, there has been a close working relationship between City Administration and the CWF Core Group.

As well, CWF has raised $100,000.00 in donations to match the CP Heritage Foundation's donation of $100,000.00 to replace the roof of the CP Station and do repairs to the outside of the building, and the City has also contributed $200,000.00 towards the Station. Kenalex Construction has completed these repairs and the CP Station has now reclaimed its prestige.

This allowed the City and CWF to further apply to the Heritage fund and Fednor for funds to do the design work on the CP Station and the Rail Lands to determine what costs will be for construction, in more accurate detail. Hopefully this will be completed by the end of May/03.

Superbuild has announced a Canada-Ontario Infrastructure fund allotment of 840,000.00 to be used to finish the interior of the CP station.

Mitchell and Associates are now doing the design, and construction on that project is hoped to begin the summer of 2003.

Another matching fund application has gone to the Heritage fund to give us enough to completely finish the CP station interior, with the hopes that we can have an operating museum running by the summer of 2004.

The renovated C.P. Station will become the new home of the North Bay Area Museum.

The ground floor exhibition area is proposed to focus on the transportation and present it in an interactive environment that will include a circa 1925 gas pump that visitors will actually be able to pump, a collection of model airplanes that will circle the ceiling, a train simulator and much more.

The second fllor of the C.P. Station will focus more on the social history of the area.

The Community Waterfront Friends vision also includes a revitalization and beautification of the downtown area.

One aspect that is desired is the planting of trees along Oak Street. For years such trees existed in the C.P.R. park.
