Sawmills were used to saw lumber for the local shipbuilders of the area during the 1920s to 1940s. The first sawmill in Marystown was operated by Joseph Baker Sr. Other mills were owned by George Gover, Creston South; Leo Cheeke and Vincent Nolan, Mooring Cove; James Flynn, Marystown South; John Farrell, James Baird Ltd.; and Nicholas Power, Marystown North.
