MEMORIES OF MY CHILDHOOD IN WHITNEY PIER

In addition, there have been informative and entertaining personal lectures such as Edna (Long) deSanctis', "Memories of My Childhood in Whitney Pier", held on May 21, 1992.

Some of those in attendance were (from left to right) Elizabeth (Keizer) Boutilier, Erma Duchek, Evelyn (Moraff) Davis, speaker Edna (Long) de Sanctis and Margaret Fitzgerald.

Edna reminisced about her days on the old school grounds and trips to Maggie Ryan's store on the corner of Church Street and Victoria Road where she and her friends used to buy 1cent molasses candy.

Edna also spoke about coasting down Catherine Street on homemade bobsleds in the winter and screwing blades onto her boots to go skating. In spring, road races were held in Whitney Pier.

Sponsored by Nate Nathanson, the event attracted the likes of Johnny Miles, the winner of the 1926 Boston Marathon. Edna touched on a variety of other subjects including the steel plant, boarding houses, old businesses and contagious illnesses.
