In 1815 John completed his training in Glasgow, and received a certificate signed by the proctors and surgeons of the Royal Hospital of Glasgow declaring that he had completed his three month practical training at the hospitals in Glasgow. Successful completion of practicum was a prerequisite for obtaining a medical license.
His certificate is roughly translated as:
We, proctors and surgeons
Of the Royal Hospital of Glasgow
In this edition of his honorable testify to a young man in the ministry John Hutchison of this surgeon's hospitals through the month last of three trained well to urge bear themselves faithfully and in care for the fields entrusted to him diligently times, and in himself skilled to have excelled.

On August 21, 1815, the faculty of physicians and surgeons of Glasgow gave license and authorization to John Hutchison to practice the arts of surgery and pharmacy.

Following his indenture to Dr. Corkindale and his graduation from the University of Glasgow, Hutchison furthered his education and medical expertise by attending the University of Edinburgh. In 1817 he graduated from there with a license in pharmacology.

With degrees in Surgery and Pharmacology, and armed with five years studying medicine under some of the best known doctors in Scotland, Dr. John Hutchison was ready to face the world.
