1836: Dr. William Taylor

Dr. Taylor was an associate of Dr. Hutchison beginning in 1836. His name is mentioned in conjunction with consultations with other doctors and in Susanna Moodie's writing.

When Moodie's five children were ill with scarlet fever, she sent for Dr. Taylor "but he did not come and I was obliged to trust to the mercy of God and my own judgment and good nursing" Instead, the family was treated by a Dr. Bird.

According to Dr. Martyn in "The Past is Simply a Beginning", in 1837 he and Dr. Hutchison advertised for a "youth of respectable connexions and good moral character with the requisite preparatory educations who would be taken as apprentice to the Medical Profession". This would have been just before Dr. John Robinson Dickson came to town. One can only assume that Dr. Dickson answered the ad.

Dr. Taylor was surgeon to the Queen's Own Regiment at the time of the 1837 Rebellion. He never applied to the Medical Board for a license. In the 'Cobourg Star' a wedding announcement dated June 1, 1842 states: "William Henry Taylor M.D. of Peterborough, to Mary Helena, third daughter of Francis Connin, R.N., of Otonabee. An obituary in the 'Peterborough Gazette' from June 27, 1846 reads: "In this town on Friday last the 19th instant, Mary Helena wife of Dr. Wm. Taylor, aged 27 years"; Not long after on July 18, 1846 another obituary appeared: "On Monday last, William Taylor, Surgeon of this town."

1838: Dr. George Gwynne Bird (born 1780)

Bird tried farming for four years on a land grant near Peterborough before moving into town.

He opened a drugstore in Peterborough and obtained a license from the Medical Board in April 1838. (The same day as Dr. George Burnham, Sr.)

In her writings Susanna Moodie relates a visit by Dr. Bird after Drs. Hutchison and Taylor failed to arrive. He apparently said "I am an old man to come thus far through such weather but I was determined that the child should not be lost if I could save it."

In 1839 he was Justice of the Peace for Peterborough County. In 1841 he moved to Darlington.
