The following season in 1941, Ottawa returned to the Grey Cup where they played the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in which they lost 18-16.

For the next three seasons (1942-1944), the IPRU decided to cease operations for World War II. In 1945, once World War II was over the IPRU returned and Ottawa finished with a 5-1 record which is good enough for a second place finish. The next time Ottawa made the playoffs in the 1940s was in 1947 where they lost in the East final against Toronto. Ottawa returned to the Grey Cup was in 1948 where they played the Calgary Stampeders who were undefeated in the season and with much effort, Ottawa lost 12-7.

Before the 1950 season, the Rough Riders decided to participate in an exhibition game against the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL) on August 12, 1950. In this game, Ottawa was outclassed as they were defeated 20-6, where Ottawa only scored in the first quarter. Ottawa did not used their NFL experience very well as they finished in last place with a 4-7-1 record.

Before the 1951 season, Ottawa decided to play the Giants once again in Ottawa, and much like their previous encounter last season, the New York Giants were once again better than Ottawa as the Giants won that game 41-18. With that loss, Ottawa used that experience and captured their fouth Grey Cup in team history. With quarterback Tommy O'Malley leading the way, the Rough Riders defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 21-14.

The next significant season in Ottawa's history was in 1956 when future hall of famer Frank Clair started to coach the Rough Riders. Frank Clair coached the Rough Riders fof 14 seasons from 1956 to 1969. In Frank Clair's first season as head coach, he led the Rough Riders to a 7-7 record and a Eastern semi-final loss to the Tiger-Cats 46-21.

Two significant things happened during the 1958 season. The first thing is that Ottawa acquired Quarterback Russ Jackson, in which he played 11 seasons from 1958 until the end of the 1969 season.

The next significant thing that happened during the 1958 season was that Ottawa and Hamilton once again decided to play in the United States. This time it was a regualr season game in Philadelphia on September 14. In this regular season game, Hamilton once again defeated Ottawa, this time by the score of 24-18, and much like the last time in which Ottawa and Hamilton played each other in the United States, the crowd was pleased with what they saw in the Canadian game.

Under Frank Clair and Russ Jackson's guidance, The Rough Riders won three Grey Cups. Ottawa's first Grey Cup under Frank Clair and Russ Jackson was during the 1960 season in which Ottawa played the heavily favoured Edmonton Eskimos and easily defeated them 16-6 in Empire Stadium in Vancouver.

Ottawa's next Grey Cup victory was during the 1968 season, when Ottawa played Calgary and defeated the Stampeders 24-21. And finally, Ottawa's last Grey Cup under Frank Clair and Russ Jackson was during the 1969 season, when the Rough Riders played Saskatchewan and easily defeated Saskatchewan 29-11 earning their seventh Grey Cup.

In the 1970s, the Rough Riders made two more Grey Cup appearances. Ottawa's first Grey Cup appearance was during the 1973 season in which they captured their eighth Grey Cup, by beating the Edmonton Eskimos 22-18 in Toronto.

In 1976 their second Grey Cup appearance in the 1970s was a special one for Rough Riders fans as this Grey Cup was known as the Miracle in Toronto.

During this game, the Rough Riders needed a touchdown to win and quarterback Tom Clements decided to go to his favourite receiver Tony Gabriel, who found himself in the end zone and scored the winning touchdown over Saskatchewan 23-20 and winning their ninth Grey Cup in franchise history. Unknown to the Rough Riders, this was the last time in which Ottawa would win a Grey Cup.
