NEW ORGANIZATION FORMED - In the early 1990's, Transport Canada decided to get out of the port business and set up the Marine Policy and Divestiture Program. In 1996, a group of Strait Area residents and politicians saw it as an opportunity for the region and they formed the Strait of Canso Superport Limited in 1997.

PORT HAWKESBURY WHARF - After Transport Canada transferred ownership of the Mulgrave Marine Terminal and the Port Hawkesbury Pier to the Superport Corporation in 2000, the volunteer Board of Directors faced the challenge head on. Reconstruction of the two facilities was the focus of the board for the next three years.
In February 2001, a $2.6 million project began in Port Hawkesbury. The old wharf was dismantled and a new wharf facility was constructed. The Port Hawkesbury wharf is now used as a pier for pleasure craft, small vessels, tugs and barges.

MULGRAVE WHARF - The Mulgrave Marine Terminal was next. A $4 million reconstruction of approximately 300 meters of wharf face provided upgraded berthage areas for a wide range of marine related activity. The Superport Board knew that more infrastructure improvements would be needed to expand business opportunities.
