Special Days

All holiday events were celebrated. A lot of effort was put into Valentine's day when a box was decorated with red and white crepe paper. A slit was made in the top where the lovely homemade valentines were deposited. This was mostly a girl-thing. The boys didn't want anyone to see them making a valentine and professing their love.

The sports recollected were Volleyball, Softball, etc. Many schools were challenged in a softball game, including Clear Creek, South Fork, North Raven, and some we may have missed.
Practicing for Track Meets was a highlight which included many sports, such as high jumping, relay racing, long jump, and many more. The sports day was generally held in Caroline,Alberta.

Fair

This was a delightful time of the year when students could show off their talents and, hopefully, get a red ribbon for their efforts. Shown is a student with a first place ribbon for her cake made with Magic Baking Powder.
The pupils worked very hard preparing their neatest and best writing, art, maps, and booklets at school, as well as sewing and cooking from home. They also exhibited garden vegetables, pets and farm animals.

School Picnic

At the end of the school year, all the people in the community joined to enjoy a picnic with the school children. It was usually held on a flat meadow by the river and was the usual type with much good food, races, ball games, and pleasant visiting.
The next exciting event would be our "Term End" picnic. Games and races of every sort took place with mothers and fathers observing. Then came lunch time, sandwiches (mainly lettuce so green and fresh),and yummy cakes with slightly melted chocolate icing. Once more we had a treat which was homemade ice cream. This was another day that was worth the while to be a student at Hazel Dell.
The picnic was a lot of fun, races and games for everyone. Gallons of homemade ice cream cranked out by hand in the old style ice cream freezers, also many cakes, cookies, and candies for the kids. What a way to start summer holidays!

Christmas Concert

The Christmas Concert was the highlight of the winter season. From November to December, box socials, pie socials, shadow socials, and masquerades were a means of fund raising. The money provided Santa with a full bag of gifts and candy for the children of the district. These concerts were the combined efforts of parents, pupils, and teachers. The classroom took on a Christmas air with decorations of streamers, bells, and stars. The air was filled with the fragrance of pine and spruce boughs that decorated the walls. The Christmas tree stood in a corner near the stage. The pupils put forth their best effort in acting, reciting, dancing, drills, and singing. All of which made the parents and teacher proud. Another activity that was eagerly welcomed by the people and the pupils was the Christmas Concert which was held in the old community hall. We practiced in the school until the last week then rode the mile to the community hall for a practice. Shilo and Wooler schools joined with South Fork for this. On concert day, the hall was packed with parents and neighbors who came to watch.
The Christmas program took place in the village hall in Caroline.
We would walk from the school to the hall every day for a week before the program to practice our plays and songs. We had lots of fun and the children were good. They ranged in ages from six to eighteen.
The Christmas concert was a highlight for young and old, and doubly so in those early days, as it marked the end of the school term. Children didn't have to go to school through the worst of winter. At that time the students drew names and exchanged small gifts around the bright tree.
