Electrical recording techniques were only introduced in 1924, thus noticeably improving the frequency spectrum and the quality of recordings, and revitalizing the record label catalogues. Before this, recording conditions required that musicians huddle up against a big bell that caught the sound. Particular registers, notably the tenor, were favoured. The quality of the recordings that resulted was lower than would be obtained by sending ambient music over the telephone lines.

Singers in the first half of the 20th century often had to vary their repertoires in order to obtain contracts. A singer could alternate between classical, light opera and traditional music with more sophisticated arrangements. Joseph Saucier was one of these versatile singers; he recorded for Columbia as well as for Berliner (La Marseillaise, first entirely made-in-Canada recording, in 1904) and His Master's Voice.
