Initially the farmers of the community of Herbert worked together and farmed one quarter of land and donated all the grain. It has now grown to five quarters of land that has approximately 24 to 25 people helping in one year to produce food for the hungry.

Foodgrains Bank, Winnipeg now owns three quarters of land that has been donated to them and two quarters are privately owned and donated year by year.

People have offered to donate seed, fertilizer, and spray. They donate their machinery for summerfallowing, spraying, seeding, swathing and combining, as well as trucking.

All the grain is delivered to the local elevator and all money is sent to the Foodgrains Bank in Winnipeg.

The Foodgrains Bank manages a centralized food/grain collection system on behalf of its13 member churches. It negotiates master agreements with CIDA, the Canadian Wheat Board and other organizations.

The working group is having a coffee break in the midst of harvesting for the Foodgrains bank. The work is very rewarding as 95% of all grain donated reaches the poor of the world.

Since 1983, in 20 years until 2003, 880,000 tonnes of food has been sent to people in need.

The community of Herbert has active Lions, Lionesses, Hospital Auxiliary, Senior Homes Auxiliary and other service organizations. Involvement in helping others is a way of life.
