Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is the cooperative relief, service and development agency of the North American Mennonite and Brethern in Christ Churches.

MCC was founded in 1920 in response to hunger and human need in Russia and Ukraine. A carload of flour was shipped to Russia from Rosthern, Saskatchewan. The second load orginated in Herbert, Saskatchewan and was shipped on December 13, 1922. Other carloads of flour followed.

Eventually MCC programs expanded to Asia, Africa, and Latin America. MCC supplies food, necessities, and human and financial resources to war-torn, famine stricken, and forgotten areas around the globe. Help is also provided to countries devastated by natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes. The services are all provided "in the name of Christ".

MCC is funded by donations from church members, relief sales, and thrift shops.

The Herbert Gift and Thrift shop is operated by volunteers. It sells used clothing and goods which are donated by the community. Some Ten Thousand Villages crafts are also sold.

Suitable donated used clothing is cut up and made into fibre-filled quilts which are taken to Saskatoon MCC and end up being stock piled. These are then shipped to countries where they are needed.

In 2003 one hundred and fifty-five fibre-filled quilts were prepared in Herbert. One Herbert lady made one quilt a week until she had eye surgery and was unable to continue.

For the past six years the community of Herbert has participated in the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

Canadian Foodgrains Bank is a Christian-based food aid and development organization that collects donations of grain, cash and other agricultural commodities for distribution to the world's hungry.

The Government of Canada contributes 4 to 1 for every bushel of grain donated by the local farmers.
