Honouring our Fallen - A Collection of Poetry

In the lead up to Remembrance Day the Grade 7/8 Language Arts class of New Richmond High School participated in a poetry unit dedicated to honouring our fallen soldiers. To help introduce the theme artifacts, stories, and photographs from the Bay Chaleur Military Museum's collection relating to several Gaspesians who died in service were brought into the classroom. Students spent the next few weeks creating three poems to honour our country's fallen soldiers. Several of the poems and accompanying artwork are featured in this storyline.

The Land - A Poem by Adam Lee Harrison, Grade 7, NRHS

The Land

Here I am,

Far away from my homeland

With a gun in my hand,

Fighting for this once lovely land.

I hope you remember me and my crew,

Fighting for you.

I am writing this poem for those at home,

I am fine,

What about that family of mine.

A lot of people fell,

But I'm doing well.

I'm going home soon,

On airplane, boat, or train,

Hopefully I'll see you soon.

The Days - A Poem by Adam Lee Harrison, Grade 7, NRHS

The Days

Here I am,

Fighting for Uncle Sam,

My homeland,

And for the man.

Here I am,

In Afghanistan,

Where it is hot,

And where I have fought.

Here I am,

With my medals in my hand,

And finally in my homeland,

With my band.

Now I tell stories,

About those days of glory,

In the black haze,

But I don't want to remember those dreary days.

Remembrance Day - A Poem by Brandon Jerome, Grade 8, NRHS

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day,

Respect we pay,

For those we lost,

Who fought at all costs.

Those men and women who went to war,

To save the needy, the peasants and the poor.

They fought for us to be free,

So that we can be you and me.

The poppies blow,

Row on row.

The flags fly,

People cry.

We stand at attention,.

Fight for redemption.

We pay our respects,

To those who protect.

The Fallen - A Poem by Daniel MacInnis, Grade 7, NRHS
Fall 2011

The Fallen

We honour the fallen,

Many lives were stolen.

Sounds from guns,

Remind many of their sons.

Their lives were taken,

Never to awaken.

Their futures were cut short,

They didn't have a chance to abort.

Ones that they lost,

Their families will pay the cost.

Never to see their loved ones,

They will remember their time in reruns.

Remembrance Day is a time,

To think of those who were in their prime.

They lost their lives for us,

God bless.

Crawling - A Poem by Daniel MacInnis, Grade 7, NRHS
Fall 2011
New Richmond High School, New Richmond, Quebec Canada

Crawling

Crawling on the battlefield,

Through soggy grass and mud.

Around the gun shots,

Rounds on the round.

Over the fallen,

Those who didn't make it home.

The battle goes far and wide,

Father then the eye can see.

When it is done,

The field scarred forever,

Or at least for now.

The poppies will grow where,

The soldiers died or got hurt.

But the poppies will grow,

And we will remember,

Those buried below.

Those who gave their life for us.

Honour, A Poem by Erika Campbell, Grade 7, NRHS
Fall 2011
New Richmond High School, New Richmond, Quebec Canada

Honour

Thank you for all the things you've done,

For us,

Your family,

And loved ones.

You've sacrificed your life,

You battled with all your heart,

You have done your best,

To win that battle without requests.

For your country,

Your homeland,

Without pity,

As a good person.

That is why,

We honour you,

With medals,

And all our love.
